SPREADING WUSHU AND AMERICAN CULTURE TO KIDS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD
SPREADING THE SPIRIT AND ENERGY OF WUSHU THROUGH TEACHING
We're spreading the spirit, energy, and philosophical ideas of wushu through teaching. For this trip to Jiangxi, China, we taught two classes of about 45 students, teaching almost a total of 100 students. Our main objective was to not only promote wushu, but to also exchange cultures. We brought with us our knowledge of American culture including food, sports, and language, and they shared with us their culture. During this trip, we offered two classes everyday. In the morning, we talked about all the aspects of daily life in America and in the afternoon, we taught them different activities such as wushu and art. We taught them the basics of wushu including stances, punches, kicks, and a basic form. Both the students and our members benefited tremendously from this experience.
COURSES WE TAUGHT
OUR BASIC ENGLISH CLASS WAS THE FIRST CLASS THAT WE TAUGHT THE STUDENTS. WE STARTED THE TRIP OFF WITH THIS CLASS TO ENSURE THAT ALL THE STUDENTS HAD A SOLID ENGLISH BASIS. THE REST OF THE CLASSES WERE MOSTLY SPOKEN IN ENGLISH TO IMPROVE THEIR SPEAKING, LISTENING, AND WRITING SKILLS.
OUR COURSE ABOUT FOOD TAUGHT THE STUDENTS ABOUT POPULAR DISHES IN AMERICA. WE EXPLAINED TO THEM WHAT AN AMERICAN BREAKFAST, LUNCH, AND DINNER LOOKED LIKE WHILE THEY SHARED WITH US SOME POPULAR CHINESE CUISINES. THROUGH THIS COURSE, BOTH SIDES GOT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OTHER CULTURES.
OUR MUSIC CLASS TAUGHT STUDENTS ABOUT POPULAR GENRES, ARTISTS, AND SONGS IN THE UNITED STATES. ALONG WITH TEACHING THE STUDENTS ABOUT MUSIC IN AMERICA, THEY ALSO TAUGHT US ABOUT POPULAR ARTISTS AND SONGS IN CHINA. AT THE END OF THE CLASS, WE ALL PLAYED GAMES TO GET THE CHANCE TO LISTEN TO POPULAR MUSIC FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD.
OUR TRANSPORTATION CLASS TAUGHT STUDENTS ABOUT SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR METHODS OF TRAVEL IN THE US. THROUGH THIS COURSE, WE TAUGHT THE STUDENTS BASIC BUT IMPORTANT VOCABULARY WORDS REGARDING TRANSPORTATION, AND WE ALSO GOT TO LEARN ABOUT SOME POPULAR MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION IN CHINA.
ON THIS TRIP, OUR MEMBERS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO LIVE IN THE STUDENT DORMS AT DEXING MIDDLE SCHOOL. THIS COMBINED WITH THEIR INTERACTIONS WITH THE STUDENTS ALLOWED THEM TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR CHINESE ROOTS.
THIS TRIP ALLOWED OUR MEMBERS TO LEAVE WITH A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF WUSHU BECAUSE WHILE TEACHING THE STUDENTS, THEY HAD TO RECALL CORRECTIONS THAT THEIR COACHES HAD GIVEN THEM. TEACHING THE STUDENTS ALSO ALLOWED OUR MEMBERS TO HAVE A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT EACH OF THE MOVEMENTS ARE FOR AND WHY THEY ARE IMPORTANT.
EXPERIENCING WHAT IT'S LIKE TO MAKE AN IMPACT
WHILE INTERACTING AND TEACHING THE STUDENTS DURING THIS TRIP, OUR MEMBERS GOT TO EXPERIENCE WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO KNOW THAT THEY WERE MAKING AN IMPACT. WHETHER THAT WAS THROUGH PLAYING GAMES WITH THE KIDS, OR THROUGH TEACHING THEM NEW KNOWLEDGE, SEEING THEIR EYES LIGHT UP HAS HAD A LASTING IMPACT ON THE MEMBERS THAT HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO ON THIS TRIP.
